Demi Lovato sat down with Today correspondent Donna Farizan to open up about how life has changed for her since she suffered a highly publicized overdose in 2018.
The actress and singer gushed over her new fiancé Jordan Lutes and explained why she has “slowed down” her life and work in recent years.
“I feel happier than I’ve ever been,” she told Today. “I feel like I’m in such a really great place, also just spiritually and emotionally. Not only am I in love but I’m also just mentally very strong.”
The former child star has been working in music and entertainment since she was about 10 years old, when she got her start on Barney and Friends and later the Disney Channel.
“I spent so much of my life working really, really hard and maintaining a kind of stressful schedule,” she admitted. “And when I had my near-death experience, it put everything into perspective for me of like, what makes you happy – my family, my friends, my dogs, the memories that you make with people.”

She added, “I slowed down a little bit and I feel like it really benefitted my mental health.”
The actress’ struggle with addiction was chronicled in the 2021 tell-all documentary Dancing With The Devil, in which she and her loved ones opened up about her recovery from the 2018 overdose that caused a heart attack and three strokes.
The documentary emphasizes Lovato’s difficult childhood as it cuts between the actress detailing her parents’ tumultuous relationship and her mother’s addiction to pain pills, followed by a super-cut of her budding career in television.
Lovato is set to make her directorial debut later this year with the Hulu documentary Child Star, which will explore how achieving superstardom at a young age affects the lives of children in the entertainment industry.
In a release announcing the film, Lovato said the story was “close to home.”
“Our project sheds light on important messages about growing up in the public eye, learning to protect our boundaries, and becoming active advocates of our own destinies,” she said. “I’m humbled to be able to learn from the individuals who have lived the unique experience of child stardom and share their stories in our film.”
A release date for Child Star has not yet been announced.
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
