NextImg:Deion Sanders shades media ‘integrity’ over Colorado QB reports: ‘Just want to be first’

Deion Sanders would prefer to break his own news, thanks.

The loquacious Colorado coach took aim at the media on Tuesday as reports of the Buffaloes turning to third-stringer Ryan Staub at quarterback for Friday’s Big 12 opener at Houston took off.

“I’m not confirming nothing to y’all, you know that,” Sanders told reporters Tuesday. “We ain’t like that, we’re good. We have capable guys, Staub has been doing a phenomenal job and getting a majority of the reps, but I haven’t made that assessment or decision yet.”

Staub leapfrogging Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis to take the starting reins certainly would be noteworthy.

The redshirt sophomore led Colorado on four series against Delaware last week — Salter and Lewis played two series apiece —  and led to three touchdowns with two through the air, finishing with 157 passing yards.

Staub’s increased practice reps may have led to speculation, but Sanders was having none of it Tuesday.

“You know, in today’s media, we don’t care about being correct anymore, we just want to be first,” he said. “And there’s no subjection to you when you’re wrong. Nobody says nothing, you just go with it. I’m not saying that’s the case, but that’s where we are in media.

“Nobody gives a dern about being correct, and right. Everybody just wants to be first. That don’t make no sense to me. I would love the integrity we once had with media, I would love that.”

He wasn’t biting on any attempts to suss out his plans, either.

When asked what he liked about his quarterbacks after reviewing film, he refused to divulge.

“What did I like?” he said, “That’s a setup. God bless you all.”
