Deion Sanders isn’t shy about letting his feelings be known, and that includes being incredibly blunt with his own son.
Sanders, who joined “Inside the NFL” on Tuesday, revealed that during Colorado’s 43-35 win over in-state rival Colorado State in Week 3 of the college football season, he had certain plans for overtime, especially as the defense struggled to get stops.
Before play began in the extra frame, Sanders said, he talked with his son Shilo about just why he wasn’t going to put the defense out on the field first.
And, in the process, he threw some shade at the safety in a funny father-son moment.
“We were getting ready to go to overtime, and Shilo walked by me, and instead of saying ‘coach’ like he’s supposed to when we’re on the field, he said, ‘Dad, are the defense going out there first?'” Sanders recalled. “I said, ‘Boy, y’all ain’t stopped anybody all day, I’m putting your brother out there. I’m putting your brother out there because I know what he’s going to do. … But that was a father moment as well as a coaching moment.”
The move did pay off, as quarterback Shedeur Sanders led the Buffaloes’ offense in a five-play scoring drive before Colorado State scored its own touchdown.
Shedeur led another quick scoring drive in the second overtime before the Colorado defense finally got a stop for the win.
That third game was also consequential in that Travis Hunter, one of the team’s top wideouts, suffered a lacerated liver after taking a late hit.
The Colorado coach told reporters Tuesday that Hunter could potentially make a return to the field Friday against Stanford.
“There’s a tremendous chance he could play,” Sanders told reporters. “It goes by how he looks, how he performs in practice. How his wind is. He has to be in shape. I don’t want him to be a liability. I want him to always be a tremendous asset. Travis, he came to me yesterday morning and he said, ‘What more can I do to help us get to the point that we need to get to?’ So I love the team aspect of Travis, 100%.
“But I hope he can play.”
