Deion Sanders had no issue with son Shedeur Sanders’ curious Browns interview Wednesday.
Not long after the rookie quarterback’s exchange with reporters went viral, in which he silently mouthed responses and smiled over questions about the team’s decision to bench veteran Joe Flacco for fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, the elder Sanders responded to the move on social media.
Beginning with a collection of crying laughing emojis, the NFL Hall of Famer added, “Good 1 son. You did that,” according to ESPN Cleveland.
Shedeur’s quiet moment sparked a flurry of headlines with it seemingly in response to the Browns’ decision to keep him third string while elevating his fellow rookie.
However, the real reason came into focus as the day progressed.
“Shedeur Sanders pantomiming today was in response to ESPN analyst Rex Ryan criticizing the rookie QB earlier this week,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
Shedeur stirred buzz last week after remarking to ESPN Cleveland, “I know if you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that.”
Those comments didn’t sit well with Ryan, who tore into the 23-year-old during an appearance Monday on “Get Up.”

“Something’s missing with this kid. This kid talks and he runs his mouth. Like he said, ‘I can be a starting quarterback’ with his arms crossed like this,” Ryan said. “Get your ass in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows. Quit being an embarrassment that way. You’ve got the talent to be the quarterback — you should be. You should be embarrassed that you’re not the quarterback now.”
Ryan’s comments sparked a war of words involving Shedeur’s mother, Pilar, who called the ex-Jets coach “cancerous” in a since-deleted post.
The Browns pivoted to Gabriel, 24, ahead of their Week 5 clash against the Vikings in London. He was selected in the third round of April’s 2025 NFL Draft — two rounds ahead of Shedeur.
Flacco, 40, started his second stint in Cleveland at 1-3.
He previously played for the Browns during the 2023 season, leading the club to a playoff berth, before signing with the Colts in the 2024 offseason.
Flacco rejoined the Browns in April.
