Colorado lost out on a couple of recruits over the past few days, and now they will need to replace an offensive coordinator.
Sean Lewis was named as the new head coach of San Diego State on Wednesday, leaving Boulder after spending a year there under head coach Deion Sanders.
Lewis had been the offensive play-caller for the first eight games this season for Colorado before Sanders before handing over the duties to former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur for the rest of the season.
“Sean is a good man; I think he is a good play-caller,” Sanders said after making the coordinator change. “We just needed change at the time. We needed to try something else at the time, and that’s what we did. I don’t look back on it. I don’t second-guess myself whatsoever, because there’s more to it than what you may know.”
Colorado’s offense scored 28.2 points per game this season, a huge step up from 2022, when the Buffaloes had the fifth-worst scoring offense in college football at 15.2 points per game.
Lewis now takes the reins of San Diego State’s football program from Brady Hoke, who announced he would be retiring earlier in November.
The Aztecs are coming off a 4-8 season this year, which was their worst record since 2009.
Lewis comes to San Diego State with a reputation as someone who employs a high-tempo, dynamic offense.
It will be his first head coaching job since he led the Kent State football program from 2018-22.
“I am thrilled to welcome Sean Lewis and his family to San Diego State University,” athletic director John Wicker said in a statement. “He is a coach with immense talent and I’m looking forward to the excitement that his teams are going to generate at Snapdragon Stadium. His approach emphasizing academic and life skills opportunities are equally important and will complement the student-athlete experience.”
Lewis went 24-31 during his five seasons at Kent State, leading the team to its first bowl win in 2019.
Previous coaching stops included assistant work at Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green and Syracuse.
