David Wright congratulated Pete Alonso for passing the former Mets third baseman on the team’s all-time home run list, telling him to set his sights on Darryl Strawberry, the franchise record holder.
Alonso moved to second all-time for home runs in Mets franchise history with his two-homer day in a 13-5 win over the Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday and leapfrogged Wright in the process.
“Just a huge congratulations,” Wright said in a video for Alonso. “You are one of the premier power hitters in the game. You easily passed me. Set Straw in your sights and now go get him. Congratulations, my man.”
Alonso is now nine home runs away from tying the franchise record and 10 away from claiming it all for himself.
The Mets star’s first homer of the day came in the third inning, when he took a first-pitch cutter from Chase Dollander to left field for a two-run blast to put the Mets up 4-0.
He sent another two-run blast to left field in the eighth inning to grab hold of second on the home run list.
“I don’t think that is really going to settle in because we’re still in the middle of the season,” Alonso said about the milestone and the possibility of more history to come. “Right now, it’s just focus on winning.”
While Alonso is keeping his focus on the big picture for the Mets, it does seem like history is imminent with Strawberry’s record in sight.
Sunday already marked the 23rd career multi-home run game for Alonso, which moved him ahead of Strawberry on the franchise’s all-time list in that category.
When discussing Alonso’s hitting, Juan Soto simply said he’s “a great hitter.”
The Mets wrapped up their seven-game West Coast trip with a 5-2 record.
