David Peterson got socked just before Citi Field got soaked.
It was game, set and match in a case of bad timing for the Mets, who wasted their limited opportunities against Max Fried in a 4-0 loss to the Braves.
The game was called following a rain delay before the sixth inning.
The Mets lost for the fifth time in six games, a night after they barely avoided getting swept by the woeful Nationals.
And with rain in the forecast for the next two days it’s anybody’s guess when the Mets will receive an opportunity to right their course.
Ideally, the teams will play at least once over the weekend and squeeze in a doubleheader on Monday, when the forecast is clear and a day game scheduled.
Peterson’s night unraveled in the fifth, when he surrendered a three-run homer to Matt Olson that buried the Mets in a 4-0 hole.
The homer was the sixth allowed by Peterson in his last three games.
For the left-hander it was a third straight shaky start and fourth in his last five appearances.
The Mets hope to within days return Max Scherzer (suspension) and Justin Verlander (injured list) to the rotation and Peterson (7.34 ERA) would appear headed toward a demotion.
Eddie Rosario singled to start the rally in the fifth and after Kevin Pillar doubled, the Mets brought in the infield with one out.
Michael Harris II hit a grounder that Brett Baty snagged and turned into a throw out at the plate as Rosario attempted to score from third.
But Ronald Acuna Jr. followed with an RBI single for the game’s first run before Olson hit a 433-foot rocket to right field that left the bat at 110.9 mph.
Fried didn’t provide the Mets with many opportunities.
Jeff McNeil walked in the second inning and stole second, but was left stranded.
Baty, Pete Alonso and Francisco Alvarez singled in the third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively, but advanced no further.
Brandon Nimmo struck out to end the fifth and the tarp was hurried onto the field with rain falling.
After an 88-minute delay, the game was called.
