Not even the iconic Yankees pinstripe uniforms are safe from a sponsored patch, and that has struck a nerve with one well-known sports fan — even if he’s from Boston.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was not impressed when the club announced a partnership with Starr Insurance that includes the company’s logo being featured with a patch on the team’s uniforms.
“This is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,” Portnoy wrote in a quote tweet of the team announcement with five crying-laughing emoji.
The well-known sports and entertainment outlet wasn’t much kinder to the announcement in an article published on Wednesday.
“Sacrilegious. Disgusting. Hideous. Grotesque. All those words could be used to describe the Yankees swallowing their pride and welcoming in advertising patches on their jerseys,” Barstool sports’ Eric Hubbs wrote.
The Yankees became the latest major league team to sell a sponsorship patch on their jerseys, joining the likes of the Mets, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers after the league allowed the additions last season.
The Mets had their own issues with their NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital patches this season, with owner Steve Cohen admitting the first iteration of the logo was in “Phillies colors.”
The team later tweaked the patches to fit the Mets’ blue and orange color scheme.
The Yankees’ deal with Starr Insurance will net the Yankees annually in the mid-$20 millions, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Post on Wednesday.
The contract runs through 2031 and is expected to be the most lucrative in MLB history.
“We are extremely proud to welcome Starr Insurance as the Yankees’ first-ever Signature Partner,” Yankees general partner Hal Steinbrenner said in a statement. “Having had Starr as an insurance carrier of ours for the last decade and having worked closely with their leadership team as part of our pre-established partnership.
“It is clear that Starr is the right company to embark with on this landmark relationship. There were many aspects of Starr that aligned with our organization, including their century-plus history, significant New York presence, worldwide reach and unparalleled commitment to the community.
“My father was also well-acquainted with [Starr CEO Maurice] Greenberg, whose devotion to philanthropy I deeply respect.”
