Things may get a little awkward when Joe Klecko and Darrelle Revis are enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.
What started as a nice story about Klecko’s interaction with Revis after both were named to this year’s Hall of Fame class turned into the former Jets cornerback feeling the need to add an addendum to what he told Klecko.
Paul Andrew Esden Jr. posted a clip of Klecko speaking with ESPN Radio’s Jake Asman about how exciting it was to be getting enshrined in Canton with a fellow Jets legend.
“I said to him [Revis] when we were out at the Super Bowl and I said to him, this is going to be New York West for a day,” Klecko recalled. “We got to sit down after, and Darrelle doesn’t say a whole lot. But the first comment we had, we were doing Sirius Radio, and he said, ‘it’s really cool that Joe and I, who are the two best defensive players ever to play with the Jets are coming in together.’”
Klecko added: “It’s cool. I mean for him and I both we’ve talked about it a little bit and about what football has meant to either of us and getting into the Hall of Fame. And it’s really going to be cool.”
Revis was apparently not as thrilled about the interaction as Klecko was and replied to the tweet roughly an hour after it was posted.
“I don’t speak to people I don’t know very well,” Revis replied on the social media platform. “And we did not speak based on you saying you were jealous of my success @ the Super Bowl. My mindset is clearly I’m @ the top of that list as the best ever but as a gentlemen I decided to say something cool for a headline.”
It didn’t stop there as the corner responded to a fan who called him out for “walking back” his comments about Klecko.
“I ain’t walking sh*t back I said what I said,” Revis responded. “It’s true what I said but also true that I’m the best defensive player in Jets history period. I don’t even know why this is even a conversation.”
Revis later tweeted that it was time for him to start his own podcast.
Asman believes Revis may have miss understood what he heard in his interview with Klecko
“Klecko was not taking any shots at Revis,” Asman tweeted. “He was PRASING [sic] his greatness and saying how awesome it is that two All-Time Jets get to go into the @ProFootballHOF together!”
There’s no question both Revis and Klecko are two of the best defensive players that have put on Jet uniforms.
Klecko was part of the famed New York Sack Exchange, was named UPI NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1981, given First-team All-Pro honors twice and named to the Pro Bowl four times during his career.
Klecko became the second player in NFL history to play in the Pro Bowl at three different positions after moving to nose tackle during the 1985 season.
Revis’ accolades speak for themselves as he was given First-team All-Pro honors in four seasons during his first run with the Jets, was a seven-time Pro Bowler over his career and won a Super Bowl with the Patriots.
During his 11 years in the NFL he recorded 29 interceptions, returned three for touchdowns and had 139 passes defensed.
He led the league in passes defensed during the 2009 season with 31.
