Darius Slayton wants to see the Giants propose to Saquon Barkley.
That was part of the analogy the receiver broke out on Twitter Saturday as the 4 p.m. Monday deadline for Barkley to sign a new deal with the Giants nears.
Responding to SNY’s Connor Hughes, who asked why the Giants should pay Barkley so much money when every other team is not investing the same at the position, Slayton tweeted, “This is like not buying YOUR wife a wedding ring because 31 other men decided THEIR wife wasn’t worth it.”
Granted, it’s rarely advisable to go broke over a wedding ring.
And the Giants do have the salary cap to deal with.
The Post’s Ryan Dunleavy has reported that the team’s best offer in terms of guaranteed money is $19.5 million for the star running back, who ran for a career-high 1,312 yards in 2022.
That is less guaranteed money than Barkley would get if he played under the franchise tag for the next two seasons ($22.2 million).
Barkley has added Creative Artists Agency help negotiate alongside Roc Nation, though The Post’s Paul Schwartz reported Thursday that talks have been relatively quiet.
After Monday, Barkley’s only options will be to sign the one-year tender for the franchise tag or sit out the season.
It is expected that if no deal is signed by Monday, Barkley will at least hold out of training camp, which starts July 25.
Barkley turned down an offer reaching $13 million annually during the season, which was withdrawn as the Giants dealt with other offseason business.
Now, Barkley is the last piece of business remaining for the franchise.
But he is at risk of being stood up at the altar.
