NextImg:Daniel Vogelbach isn’t worried about ice-cold spring, Mets lineup concerns

MIAMI — Daniel Vogelbach took his anemic spring training production in stride.

The Mets designated hitter was among a group from the expected starting lineup — including Eduardo Escobar, Mark Canha and Brandon Nimmo — who finished with underwhelming Grapefruit League numbers, but Vogelbach has been around too long to put much stock into it.

Vogelbach had a .489 OPS this spring with five RBIs.

“It can be so one way or the other,” Vogelbach said. “I’ve had some springs where I have been the best player out there and then I go into the season terrible. And then last year I had the worst spring I’ve ever had and I think had my best season.”

Vogelbach had a .553 OPS last spring with the Pirates.

He finished the season with a .793 OPS combined for the Pirates and Mets.

Though there are questions about the Mets’ lineup heading to the season opener Thursday, Vogelbach envisions success from the unit, which last season finished fifth in MLB in runs.

“I think it’s pretty special,” Vogelbach said. “You look at the top of the order with Nimmo and [Starling] Marte, and Nimmo is never an easy out and Marte is just special — I haven’t seen many as talented players as him that makes the game look so easy. Then you get to Pete [Alonso] and Francisco [Lindor], and it’s two superstars, and then the batting title champion [Jeff McNeil].”

“It’s pretty special and I think the thing that makes it the most special is everybody works together so well. When someone sees something or thinks they can help somebody they do and that is huge in this game with how good pitchers are.”

Omar Narvaez is the Mets’ scheduled Opening Day catcher for Max Scherzer. The Mets are expected to split up the position, with Tomas Nido in the mix, but manager Buck Showalter has said it won’t be a straight platoon. In this case, Narvaez will add another left-handed bat against Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara.

Carlos Carrasco threw 70 pitches in a minor league game in Port St. Lucie as a final tune-up before his first scheduled start of the regular season on Monday in Milwaukee.

Dylan Bundy threw two innings in a simulated game to begin his buildup as potential rotation depth.

The Mets signed Bundy to a minor league contract last week.
