NextImg:Daniel Jones left wide-eyed at sight of 49ers defense

The 49ers’ defense is awe-inspiring, even if you’re an opposing quarterback.

Daniel Jones was reminded of that on Thursday night, when cameras caught his eyes getting wide at the sight of what he was lining up against during a pre-snap read in a 30-12 Giants loss in Santa Clara.

The look didn’t go unnoticed as memes of the “Thursday Night Football” clip went viral.

“He looks flat-out scared and gawks,” Gregg Gianotti said on “Boomer & Gio” on Friday morning. “Have you seen this? He’s just basically like ‘ohh, ohh!’ And then you see him swallow like [gulping noise], like a cartoon character.”

What the 49ers vaunted defense, led by three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Nick Bosa, kept Jones in check all night.

The Giants QB was held to 22-for-32 passing for a quiet 137 yards with an interception and a passer rating of 64.2.

The offense picked up just 10 first downs on the night and converted just three of their 12 third downs.

“We didn’t create a rhythm,” Jones said. “We didn’t execute, didn’t take advantage of our opportunities. Certainly, it is a good defense. It’s a good team. When you’re playing good teams, you can’t afford to do that. We didn’t play well enough.”

Still, Jones and the Giants offense were able to stay in the game early into the third quarter, when Matt Breida’s eight-yard run closed the gap to 17-12, though the QB was sacked on the two-point conversion attempt.

Daniel Jones saw more than enough of the 49ers defense on Thursday night.

It was the closest Big Blue would get as 49ers reeled off 13 unanswered points and Jones & Co. were effectively stymied.

“I think it was frustrating at times, but I felt like we were in the game really until the end and had chances to make plays really until the end,” Jones said. “I think we stayed confident and believed and we just didn’t do it there down the stretch. I think we did a good job kind of keeping a level head and competing.”
