It sounds as if Daniel Jones, dealing with a neck injury, has yet to receive medical clearance for contact, and without that clearance, he will not get back on the field to reclaim the Giants’ starting quarterback role.
“I’m feeling good. Getting better,’’ Jones said Tuesday on his weekly spot on the “Up & Adams Show.”
“Doing everything I can to get back out there. Feeling good, just trying to do everything the doctors and trainers tell me to do. I’m feeling better.
“I’m able to do everything I need to do from a running, throwing, lifting standpoint. It’s mostly a contact thing, like I’ve said, proving that I can handle that.’’
Without Jones, the Giants lost in Week 6 to the Bills 14-9 in Orchard Park and in Week 7 beat the Commanders 14-7 at MetLife Stadium to end a four-game losing streak.
Tyrod Taylor, the 34-year old backup, started in place of Jones the past two games and might have to do so again Sunday, when the Giants (2-5) face the Jets (3-3).
Taylor completed 18 of 29 passes for 279 yards and tossed touchdown passes to tight end Darren Waller and running back Saquon Barkley against Washington, although the Giants did not score a point in the second half.
“Certainly enjoy watching [Taylor] play and he’s played well, made a lot of big plays for us, big win for us on Sunday,’’ Jones said. “I enjoyed watching his success. I know how hard he works and how much he puts into it to play that well. As a competitor you want to be on the field, you want to be out there but happy for him, happy for our team.
“Tyrod played well, that was fun to see. Darren stepped up and made a lot of big plays for us. It wasn’t perfect, I think the second half we kept battling, kept fighting, I think our defense played great the whole game and came up with that huge stop there on fourth down in the low red zone when the game was on the line. I thought it was a complete team win and it was fun to watch.’’
Jones was not asked if he continues to experience symptoms from the neck injury that forced him out of the 31-16 loss to the Dolphins in Miami Gardens.
It was reported previously that Jones felt the symptoms on the left side of his neck and also in his left shoulder.
Until those symptoms subside, Jones is unlikely to get back on the field.
“It’s passing some of those tests and showing the doctors and trainers what I need to show ‘em for them to feel good about me being out there,’’ Jones said. “It’s following their protocols and their plan, their treatment, their rehab stuff and showing that I’m ready to go.
“Still working through it and got to continue to improve. Yeah, the goal is to play on Sunday and be out there with the guys.’’
