Saturday Night Live star Dana Carvey recently opened up about how he has been coping with the sudden loss of his 32-year-old son, Dex Carvey, who passed away in November.
On a new episode of his podcast Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade, Dana said that he’s been spending more time with his wife, Paula Zwagerman, and their 30-year-old son since Dex’s passing.
“I’m kind of on the pain train with about millions of other people on this planet,” he told his longtime friend and co-host David Spade. “And you don’t know how long you’re going to be on it or when it will stop or when it will get better.”
He also noted that the family received a “very sweet” outpouring of support from Dex’s loved ones.
“It’s me and my wife and our son’s private journey,” Dana said. “We’re all together. And we do a lot of fun things. We hike, we go to church. You just want to make sure you keep moving.”
Dana has been open about how he’s recovered since Dex’s passing. Shortly after the news broke, the Wayne’s World actor announced he would be “taking a break from work and social media.”

Dex passed away in November 2023 from an accidental overdose. TMZ reported that the comedian was discovered by his girlfriend, who found him unresponsive in the bathroom. Attempts made to revive him were unsuccessful.
He had worked with his father multiple times over the years as he was building his own career in stand-up comedy. Dex also opened for Dana during his 2016 Netflix special, Straight White Male.
In his statement announcing Dex’s death, Dana praised his son’s love for life.
“When you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family; his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee,” he said.
