Damien Woody was left with a bloody finger stemming from a mini-helmet smashing segment on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Thursday.
During the segment on the show, Woody had to decide which helmet to smash, indicating a team he thought would lose this weekend.
He either had to smash the helmet of the Patriots or the Jets as they are set to play on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, and he chose the Patriots, despite them being the favorites and the Jets having not beaten New England since December 2015.
But the Patriots’ start to the season has not been pretty, as they have lost back-to-back home games.
As for the Jets, the loss of Aaron Rodgers in Week 1 has overshadowed their second place standing in the AFC East heading into Week 3.
Despite all that, Woody picked the Jets — and injured his finger in the process.
Host Mike Greenberg announced to viewers that Woody had “sustained an injury” during the segment, which was followed by a close-up shot of the bloody finger.
“I’m not really placed on injury reserve,” said Woody jokingly.
“Of course, it happened on New England,” he added. “Look at that, it’s a bad omen. I smashed New England and it came back on me.”
For Woody, the decision couldn’t come easy, as he played for both the Patriots (1999-2003) and the Jets (2008-10).
Ultimately, the New England helmet stood no chance between the mallet and Woody’s offensive guard strength.
When co-host Harry Douglas was asked what he thought about the cut, he said he knew Woody would be able to tough it out.
“He’s used to that though,” said Douglas. “He played offensive line. You’re blocking with your hands, you get physical every play. He’s used to those.”
