Cynthia Nixon‘s political views were the least controversial part of her run for New York governor back in 2018. Instead, it was her unusual bagel order that had New Yorkers up in arms.

When the And Just Like Thatstar stopped by the Bravo Clubhouse for Thursday night’s (June 12) episode of Watch What Happens Live, a fan from the live studio audience asked about the backlash she received for ordering a cinnamon raisin bagel with lox and capers.

“I got a surprising amount of backlash, I thought,” Nixon said. “I mean, I said things like, ‘We should abolish ICE,’ in my campaign and, ‘We should legalize marijuana,’ but somehow this was the controversial thing.”

The actress, however, added, “I have not changed my bagel order.”

The controversial order, which was documented in a September 2018 article from The Gothamist amid Nixon’s political campaign, drew harsh criticism from social media users — and even made its way to late-night television when Stephen Colbert spoke about the odd cuisine on an episode of The Late Show.

“Cynthia Nixon asked for lox, red onions, capers, tomato and plain cream cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say, this is the worst Nixon scandal in the history of politics,” he wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), along with a GIF of him pretending to take a bite of the bagel.

Nixon later defended her choice in a November 2018 chat with Vulture, telling the interviewer, “It’s fantastic and a lot of people have come up to me on the streets and said, ‘I get that, too.’ They say it in secret. But in 2018, we have to learn to come out about everything.”

The Sex and the City star ultimately lost the gubernatorial primary, with Andrew Cuomo gaining 65% of the vote, while she only received 35% of the vote. Was it because of her bagel order? The world may never know.

Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
