NextImg:Cycling bosses reviewing rules for transgender athletes after Austin Killips wins women’s race

Cycling’s governing body is changing its tune after defending transgender female Austin Killips, who won a women’s race in New Mexico last weekend.

Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which said Tuesday that “transgender athletes may wish to compete in accordance with their gender identity,” said in a new statement Thursday the organization will review its rules for transgender athletes and “analyze the current situation,” with a new decision anticipated in August.

The win by the 27-year-old Killips, who became the first transgender female to win a UCI stage race after winning the Tour of the Gila stage race in 3:07:16 and won $35,000 for taking first place, sparked outrage on social media.

Governing bodies in track and field and swimming have barred athletes who underwent male puberty from competing in international women’s events.

The UCI said after a management committee meeting it is “reopening consultation with the athletes and national federations.”

Cycling’s rules were changed last year to require transgender athletes to have serum testosterone levels of 2.5 nanomoles per liter or less for at least 24 months before competing in women’s events. The previous rule stipulated below five nanomoles for only 12 months.

“The UCI’s objective remains the same: to take into consideration, in the context of the evolution of our society, the desire of transgender athletes to practice cycling,” the Switzerland-based organization said. “The UCI also hears the voices of female athletes and their concerns about an equal playing field for competitors, and will take into account all elements, including the evolution of scientific knowledge.”

The next management meeting is from July 31-Aug. 2 on the sidelines of the world championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

“After a week of nonsense on the internet I’m especially thankful to everyone in the peloton and sport who continue to affirm that twitter is not real life,” Killips said on Instagram this week. “I love my peers and competitors and am grateful for every opportunity I get to learn and grow as a person and athlete on course together.”
