A customer spent more than 8 hours locked inside the vault of a Midtown Manhattan jewelry store overnight before finally walking out unscathed early Wednesday.
The customer, an unidentified 23-year-old man, became locked inside the store’s vault at about 10 p.m. Tuesday night when a timed mechanism spurred the vault to lock, officials said.
Police received a call requesting help from DGA Vault and Business Center at 580 Fifth Avenue at about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday night and arrived to find the man trapped inside.
FDNY and NYPD personnel worked through the night at the building, trying to gain access to the secure vault, police told The Post Wednesday morning.
Rescue crews were unable to penetrate the vault’s sturdy concrete walls overnight, and were forced to wait until the timer system unlocked the structure early the following morning.
The vault’s timer mechanism finally unlocked automatically at 6:15 a.m., and the man was finally able to get out, police said.
He was examined by EMS but was not injured, police said.
No criminality is suspected, police said.
