Sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to get outs in the major leagues.
This time?
Not so much.
When Cubs catcher Tucker Barnhart was deployed during an 8-0 blowout against the Braves in the ninth inning on Friday, he shocked everyone by tossing eephus pitches between 30-40 mph — and actually getting outs.
The position player needed just six pitches to dispatch the Braves in a scoreless inning, allowing one hit to National League MVP favorite Ronald Acuña Jr.
After Barnhart floated in a 37-mph offering to the Braves’ superstar right fielder, the catcher immediately started back up off the mound in preparation for a blast from Acuña’s big bat.
Fortunately for Barnhart, who had pitched a total of three innings his big-league career before this one, Acuña laced a 105 mph single through the right side of the infield.
As for the other Braves who had to face Barnhart?
They weren’t so lucky.
Barnhart retired center fielder Michael Harris II with a groundout, then got Ozzie Albies to pop up and Austin Riley to fly out to end the inning.

The catcher, who the Cubs signed to a two-year deal prior to the 2023 season, mostly for his defensive prowess, has a .551 OPS in 107 at-bats this year.
The Cubs went down big after usually reliable starter Kyle Hendricks gave up seven runs in four innings to the high-powered Atlanta offense, which ranks first in MLB in homers and second in runs scored.
After a rough start to the season, Chicago has recently turned it around and posted a winning record for both June and July.

Atlanta, meanwhile, has been the class of the majors — their 70-37 record is the best in the league, and Acuña (1.002 OPS) appears to have wrapped up the NL MVP award.
