A coach with the Cuban team at this year’s Little League World Series has gone missing.
Bayamo coach Jose Perez left the Little League International Grove complex in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Saturday before the team’s game, a 3-2 loss, to Panama the following day and did not come back, a Little League spokesperson confirmed in a statement.
“Jose Perez, a coach with Bayamo, Cuba, at the Little League Baseball World Series, left the Little League International Grove late last night, Saturday, August 19, and did not return,” Kevin Fountain, senior director of communications at Little League International, said in a statement on Monday.
According to the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Perez left the facility around 11 p.m. Saturday and got into a vehicle by Route 15.
Cuba, playing in its first-ever Little League World Series, extended its relationship with Little League until 2025 just hours before Perez’s disappearance, The Associated Press reported.
“Little League International has communicated to all appropriate authorities and will ensure the Bayamo Little League team continues to have the best support and experience while in Williamsport,” Fountain added.
Cuba’s presence in the annual summer tournament comes after Little League and the country began a formal relationship in 2019 and then expanded its field in 2021.
The team, managed by Vladimir Vargas, lost its first-ever game on Aug. 16, 1-0, to Japan before beating Australia, 11-1, three days later.
Cuba was then eliminated with its Sunday loss to Panama.
According to the AP, Little League worked with the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control and the State Department to acquire visas for the team, coaches and baseball officials for this year’s World Series.
“We are very proud to be here representing Cuba,” Vargas said through a translator before the tournament started, according to the AP. “We have many teams that want to be here, and we are the ones.
“It is an awesome thing for us.”
