NextImg:Cristobal Del Solar shoots 57 to set new PGA-sanctioned event record

Cristobal Del Solar owns a bit of golf history with his opening round score at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Astara Golf Championship.

Del Solar recorded the lowest-ever round at a PGA Tour-sanctioned event when he shot a 13-under 57 at the Country Club de Bogotá-Pacos in Bogota, Colombia, on Thursday.

The Chilean golfer made par on the final hole of the day and had just missed a shot from 6 feet out that would have given him a 56.

Del Solar shot a 27 through the first nine holes of the day and recorded a 30 on the back nine.

The course itself proved to be a big help on Thursday, as soggy conditions from rain earlier in the week allowed players to lift, clean and place their balls under preferred lie rules.

The course itself is 6,254 yards and plays short.

“[There were] a lot of holes that were drivable; I wouldn’t say drivable, but within 20 yards of the green,” the 30-year-old Del Solar said, according to ESPN. “I wouldn’t necessarily get on the green, but I was around it. The course was definitely set up to shoot a low score.”

But naturally, he wasn’t expecting to shoot as well as he did on Thursday.

“Now, when you go onto a course like this, you don’t think, ‘I’m going to shoot 57.’ You just go out there and do your best and hope it’s a really low score. You’ve still got to do it, obviously,” Del Solar added.

The memorable day also tied for the lowest round in any professional tournament, which was originally set by Ireland’s David Carey in 2019 when he posted an 11-under 57.

The previous Korn Ferry Tour record was held by Germany’s Stephan Jaeger when he shot a 58 at the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic that was held at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, California.
