NextImg:Crenshaw bill would cut federal funding from ‘toxic’ woke universities

Rep. Dan Crenshaw is taking aim at colleges and universities that mandate students sign on to so-called “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) statements.

The Texas Republican announced a bill Monday that would slash funding for higher education institutions that make students commit themselves to the woke oaths — which vow to boost racial, ethnic and gender minorities, along with other historically underrepresented groups, at the expensive of the purportedly “privileged.”

“We can see the utter moral bankruptcy in higher education with the spread of antisemitism on college campuses,” Crenshaw said in a statement.

Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel that killed an estimated 1,200 people — including 33 Americans — some of the most elite US campuses have become hotbeds of Jew hatred.

“Make no mistake,” Crenshaw went on. “The DEI bureaucracy is directly responsible for a toxic campus culture that separates everyone into oppressor versus oppressed.

“I am dropping legislation to protect free thought and prevent federal funding for universities that force students to write diversity, equity, and inclusion statements.”

Republicans have long been critical of DEI initiatives, and red states across the country, including Texas, have enacted policies to curtail them.

The bill would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to prevent taxpayer money from going to institutions with DEI requirements, as well as keep institutions from using such statements as a condition of employment or enrollment.

Colleges and universities would also be blocked from compelling students to reveal their “race, color, ethnicity, or national origin, except to the minimum extent needed [to] record any necessary demographic information.”

The bill stresses that nothing in it should be “construed” as barring students from providing such material of their own accord or prohibiting “pedagogical approaches or experience with students with learning disabilities.”

Crenshaw’s legislation is modeled off a recent Texas law that bars DEI programs from public universities in the state.

The House is currently in recess for the holidays and will return Jan. 9.
