Arizona Coyotes minority owner Andrew Barroway was arrested on Thursday in Aspen, Colo., where he was accused of strangling his wife.

The Aspen Daily News reports that the 57-year-old Barroway was charged with felony and misdemeanor assault in the incident.

Barroway was the majority owner of the Coyotes from 2014 until 2019, when he sold his majority stake to Alex Meruelo.

The NHL said in a statement that Barroway has been “suspended indefinitely” pending further investigation.

According to the police affidavit, Barroway’s wife told authorities that the “first altercation started last night [Wednesday] before dinner when her and Andrew were bickering … She went to splash him with a drink and the bottle slipped and flew towards Andrew.

“He slapped the bottle away and it broke, sending him into a ‘rage.’

“After further interviewing, [the wife] clarified that Andrew slapped the bottle out of her hand.

“He then strangled her with one hand and put her on the ground in the bathroom and a second time in the kitchen. Both the events caused fear and pain, stating that she ‘saw stars.’”

“We are aware of the allegation regarding Mr. Barroway and we are working with the League to gather more information,” the Coyotes said in a statement.

“When we have enough information, we will have an appropriate response. Until the investigation is complete, we will have no further comment.”

Barroway is the managing partner of the hedge fund Merion Investment Management LP, which is based in New York and Scottsdale.

Barroway lives in Scottsdale.

He previously attempted to buy the Devils and Islanders.

Police were called to the Limelight Hotel in Aspen on Thursday morning amid reports that a couple was fighting loudly.

A manager of the hotel told authorities that he had visited the room, and that the male guest apologized for the disturbance and shut the door.

Shortly thereafter, the couple allegedly resumed screaming at each other.

[The manager] knocked again and informed them that she is calling the police,” the affidavit said. “The male asked them not to call the police and they’ve been quiet since then.”

The manager reported that the woman informed a housekeeper that she was “not OK,” “afraid,” “not well” and “hurt.”

The affidavit said that police “knocked several times, and announced myself, but no one answered the door.”

“The hotel called the room and advised the guest to answer the door,” police continued.

“Two individuals answer the door, Andrew Barroway and [his wife]. [The wife] appeared to be in distress as she was currently heavily crying, seemed to have been crying for a while, had bruising on her ankles, knees, and blood on her hands.”

Barroway’s wife reportedly told police, “I don’t want to ruin my prenup with him, so I didn’t want to say anything bad about him.”

Police said Barroway told an officer that it was his wife’s birthday, that she had previously been to rehab twice.

Barroway further said that they were going through a divorce, but attempting to be together.

The couple was allegedly arguing about child support and Barroway’s will.

Police said that Barroway’s wife had several injuries from the night before, including bruises on her knees, ankles and one of her thighs, dried blood spots on her neck and a cut on one of her thumbs.

Barroway was released on Friday on a $2,500 recognizance bond, and issued an order of protection in which he is prohibited from having contact with his wife.
