Brandon Aubrey had a chance to tie an NFL record ripped from his hands thanks to an inexcusable error by the Cowboys.
The Dallas kicker sent a 66-yard field goal attempt through the uprights during the end of the first half.
However, just as Aubrey began his kicking motion the officials jumped in to blow the play dead, but the kicker had already started to kick.
The refs called a delay of game on the Cowboys, which negated the kick that would have given Dallas a 23-3 lead going into halftime against the Browns
Aubrey converted the kick – even if it didn’t count – from the Browns’ 48-yard line.
The record for the longest field goal made was set back in 2021 by Ravens kicker Justin Tucker.
The Cowboys had two timeouts left to use making the error even more unforgivable and after Dallas was pushed back five yards because of the penalty, head coach Mike McCarthy kept the kicking unit on briefly considering letting Aubrey attempt the 71-yard try.
However, the Cowboys coach sent Dak Prescott back onto the field to try a hail-mary play to close out the second quarter.
“He had it. I saw the clock running down, I don’t know why they didn’t call a timeout” Tom Brady said from the Fox broadcast booth as he discussed the play.
Former NFL punter turned sports media personality Pat McAfee also weighed in on X.
“Brandon Aubrey robbed of that 66 yarder is a real travesty.. I’m so bummed [out] for him. This dude is phenomenal,” McAfee wrote.
Aubrey had already impressed with his leg earlier in the game when he sent a 57-yard field goal easily through the uprights with 2:11 left on the clock in the opening half.
