NextImg:Cowboys expected to hire Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator after flirting with Rex Ryan

The Cowboys have seemingly found their defensive coordinator for the 2024 season.

Mike Zimmer is expected to be hired for the position and will call the defensive signals next year, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Thursday.

After the Cowboys’ previous defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn, left to become the head coach of the Commanders, the team had a vacancy to fill, and with the void, former Jets and Bills head coach Rex Ryan was in the mix for the role.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about the possibility of Ryan getting the position on Thursday night before the NFL Honors awards, and he confirmed Ryan was interviewed Tuesday, calling him an “outstanding candidate.”

“He’d bring about as much football knowledge and about as much passion as you could put out there,” Jones said when pressed about Ryan.

But, instead, Jones and the Cowboys went with Zimmer, 67, whose last stint in the NFL came as the Vikings’ head coach from 2014-21.

He’ll now be now making his second stint with the Cowboys after he worked in various coaching roles in Dallas from 1994-06, which included a Super Bowl win in 1996 and six years as the team’s defensive coordinator (2000-06).

Dallas is hoping Zimmer can continue the Cowboys’ recent stretch of defensive success.

Led by pass-rusher Micah Parsons, the Cowboys yielded just 18.5 points and 299.7 yards per game, which ranked fifth in the NFL.

Ryan, now an analyst at ESPN, hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2016 after he was dismissed by the Bills.

He also interviewed for the Broncos’ defensive coordinator position last year, but Denver brought in Vance Joseph for the role.
