H2 uh-oh!

A couple in Beijing, China were appalled to learn that they had been drinking toilet water for six months, after moving into their new apartment, Jam Press reports.

A man — who prefers to be referred to only as Mr. Tan — and his unidentified girlfriend began experiencing strange health issues shortly after their move in May. Both developed an unexplained cough, while Tan even claimed to lose hair and develop acne.

When Tan realized he hadn’t paid a water bill in six months — and yet, the $1,400-a-month rental continued to receive water — he began to get suspicious.

He ran some tests with their water meters and noticed something wasn’t right. When the couple ran water in the apartment, the number on the meter didn’t increase.

Deciding it was time to consult the pros, the couple called a plumber.

That’s when the shocking discovery was made — an extra pipe that had gone unnoticed allegedly linked the toilet and tap water pipes.

For six months, the couple was horrified to discover, all the water in the apartment had been toilet water. Tan and his girlfriend had been drinking, bathing, and cooking with this water.

Luckily, the plumber was able to rectify the problem immediately, and the pipes were fixed — but the couple claimed to experience adverse effects on their health and well-being for half a year.

Tan is seeking monetary damages from the rental firm, as the unidentified company argued that some tenants opted to source water from a nearby well.

The rental company claims that the well water passed quality tests as recently as March, but that water is reportedly only intended for flushing toilets and watering plants.

In any case, Tan claims that he and his girlfriend were never informed of this arrangement before moving in, and his negotiations with the rental company continue.
