NextImg:Cooper Kupp placed on injured reserve as Rams injury outlook gets worse

The Rams will be without star wide receiver Cooper Kupp for at least the first four weeks of the season after placing him on injured reserve, according to multiple reports.

Kupp had already been ruled out by head coach Sean McVay for Sunday’s season opener against the Seahawks.

By making the injured reserve decision Saturday, Kupp won’t be eligible to return until the Rams’ Week 5 matchup against the Eagles — missing games against the Seahawks, 49ers, Bengals and Colts.

He suffered a hamstring setback during practice and visited a specialist in Minnesota last weekend.

McVay called the injury “unfortunate” and “frustrating” for Kupp.

The Athletic reported that the Rams are trying to figure out whether Kupp’s injury deals with a soft-tissue concern or a nerve issue.

“Just dealing with some soft-tissue stuff, just trying to get him to feel back to normal,” McVay told reporters during the week. “When that ends up occurring, we’ll have him back, but in the meantime, he will not be playing for us.”

Without Kupp, wide receivers Van Jefferson, Tutu Atwell and Puka Nacua become the top three wideouts competing for targets from Matthew Stafford alongside tight end Tyler Higbee.

The Rams already needed to navigate without Kupp for eight games last season.

He’d caught 75 passes for 812 yards and six touchdowns across their first eight-plus games, but in Week 9 against the Cardinals, Kupp sustained the ankle injury when he attempted to catch a pass and Arizona cornerback Marco Wilson knocked Kupp to the ground with a hit around the ankle.

The Rams’ 2022 season had already started to spiral, and Kupp’s injury — and absence — didn’t help.

And it’ll be at least another four weeks before the Rams’ offense could be completely intact, too.

“There’s just a lot of ‘gray’ behind this,” McVay told reporters, according to The Athletic. “I’m not a doctor, so I can’t really answer anything more about that. I just know that it doesn’t follow the standard protocol for when you’re re-aggravating a soft-tissue injury.”
