NextImg:Conan O’Brien tells Danny Masterson he’d be ‘caught soon’ in awkward clip before rape sentence

Nearly 20 years before Danny Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for two counts of rape, Conan O’Brien told the actor he would be “caught soon.”

In an awkward 2004 clip that resurfaced on social media after the “That ’70s Show” alum’s sentencing Thursday, the talk show host spoke to Masterson about his Long Island accent.

“It just goes away naturally,” the “Ranch” alum, now 47, said at the time. “And then there [are] also certain words that there’s nothing you can do about.”

As an example, he said, “My friend always teases me. He says, ‘Hi, my name is Danny Masterson, would you like to touch my balls?’”

After O’Brien, 60, asked why his “Late Night” guest used that particular phrase — “Are you asking people to do that?” — Masterson joked that “everybody should grab” his testicles.

“I mean, you got ’em,” he said at the time. “You know what I mean?”

Masterson subsequently agreed when O’Brien replied, “I’ve heard about you. And you’ll be caught soon. I know you will.”

Social media users reacted to the “cringe-worthy” footage after Masterson received the maximum sentence for his crimes.

“I’ve heard about you,” the talk show host said in an awkward 2004 clip.

The quip came after the actor made a joke about having his balls touched.

“This is part of Conan’s mastery,” one tweeted. “It could plausibly be played off as a joke riffing off Masterson but it has that slight edge that suggests yeah, he had definitely heard about him and knew he needed to be caught soon.”

Another wrote, “This def didn’t age well,” while many joked that O’Brien was able to “predict the future” as a former writer for “The Simpsons.”

Masterson was playing Steven Hyde on “That ’70s Show” at the time the episode aired. He reunited with co-star Ashton Kutcher for “The Ranch” in 2016 but was written out after multiple women came forward with accusations of sexual abuse.

Masterson was charged with three counts of rape in June 2020 and found guilty of two of those in May.

When the “Men at Work” alum was sentenced Thursday, California Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo told him, “You are not the victim here.

“Your actions 20 years ago took away another person’s choice and voice,” she continued. “Your actions 20 years ago today were criminal, and that’s why you are here.”
