NextImg:Comer wants Biden impeached, teases more details on family loans

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer says he wants Congress to impeach President Biden while teasing subpoenas against the first family concerning their overseas dealings.

Comer (R-Ky.) is helming an impeachment inquiry of the president — a fact-finding mission into whether Joe Biden engaged in influence peddling schemes during his time as vice president.

“I think he should, but that’s going to be left up to the speaker,” Comer told Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” when asked about impeachment. “People ask me why I haven’t put someone in jail yet. All I can do is investigate.”

In US history, there have only been four presidential impeachments, three of which came during the past 25 years, including the last two against former President Donald Trump.

Freshly crowned Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has refrained from backing a formal impeachment of Biden just yet, but indicated a decision is coming “very soon.”

Comer teased that “subpoenas are imminent” and that “this is going to be a big week.” So far, his panel has refrained from subpoenaing Hunter Biden or members of the first family directly for testimony.

At one point, host Maria Bartiromo told Comer, “[the president] says he never discussed business with his son, was never in business with his son. Are you planning on calling them in and getting subpoenas out?”

“Absolutely,” Comer replied. “We have always planned on doing that.”

Comer is the chairman of the House Oversight Committee which has been scrutinizing the Biden family’s dealings since the GOP takeover of the House of Representatives earlier this year.

The Oversight Committee is overseeing the impeachment inquiry alongside the Judiciary Committee and Ways and Means Committee.

Comer again made bold claims about what congressional investigators have uncovered about the Biden family.

“We have subpoenaed bank accounts. And now we have enough bank accounts, Maria, where we can actually trace the money,” he added, accusing the Biden family of “money laundering.”

“This was a very organized criminal enterprise by the Biden family. This wasn’t just some drug addict doing concoctions and making wild transactions. This was very organized.”

Joe Biden insisted he was not entangled in his son Hunter’s overseas business machinations.

The White House has strenuously denied Comer’s accusations against the president’s first family, accusing him of making outlandish claims, and then failing to back them up with evidence.

“Comer’s lies and conspiracy theories are getting more desperate by the day,” White House spokesman Ian Sams posted on X last week.

Sams’ jab at Comer came in response to a memo from the Oversight Committee alleging that the president got $40,000 in “laundered” funds from Chinese government-linked CEFC China Energy in 2017 when he was out of office.

The Post contacted the White House for comment.

Comer also contended that the president will have to answer the public on the conditions of the loans.

“The next big question the Biden family, including Joe Biden, is going to have to answer to the American people is, what exactly are the terms of these loans? What type of documentation do you have on these loans?” Comer said.

The White House has bristled at House Republicans, accusing them of distorting the first family’s finances.

Scandal-plagued first son, Hunter Biden recently penned an op-ed lamenting the scrutiny he has received and accused Republicans of “weaponizing” his drug addiction struggles.

“My struggles and my mistakes have been fodder for a vile and sustained disinformation campaign against [President Biden], and an all-out annihilation of my reputation through high-pitched but fruitless congressional investigations and, more recently, criminal charges for possessing an unloaded gun for 11 days five years ago – charges that appear to be the first-ever of their kind brought in the history of Delaware,” he wrote in a USA Today piece.

Joe Biden is the undisputed frontrunner to be his party’s standard bearer in 2024.

Recent polling from the New York Times and Sienna College shows the incumbent president trailing Trump, the GOP frontrunner, in five of six key battleground states.
