Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Texans after being looked at for a concussion.
The injury seemingly occurred during Richardson’s second rushing touchdown in the first half of the game after his head snapped back to the turf as he was hit going into the end zone, according to Albert Breer.
The play in question occurred with 9:13 left in the first quarter.
Richardson — the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft — faked a handoff and rolled to the right to scurry the 15 yards for the touchdown, but was knocked over by M.J. Stewart after he crossed the goal line.
Colts backup quarterback Gardner Minshew eventually came into the game for Richardson early in the second quarter.
Richardson completed six of his 10 passing attempts while he was in the game for 56 yards.
He also had 35 yards on the ground.
His first touchdown run opened up the scoring on the Colts’ first offensive possession with an 18-yard touchdown run to finish off a 75-yard drive.
Richardson had dropped back for a pass before deciding to scramble up the open lane in front of him for the touchdown run.
This marked the second consecutive week that Richardson exited a game early.
The rookie missed the last three plays of the Colts’ 31-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 with what was described as knee soreness.
Richardson was not on Indianapolis’ Week 2 injury report.
Sunday’s game had some anticipation around it as two of the top picks in this year’s draft went head-to-head with Richardson going up against C.J. Stroud, who was taken second overall by the Texans.
The matchup was slated to be the youngest QB matchup in NFL history, according to Adam Schefter.
Both quarterbacks are 21 years old.
