NextImg:CM Punk praised by Tony Khan for AEW contributions after WWE stunner

Tony Khan hasn’t said much about CM Punk’s controversial actions, suspension and firing from AEW, but the company’s president did give a little nod to his former star.

The AEW CEO has often declined comment about Punk, citing legal reasons.

But with the two-time AEW champion officially closing the books on his time with Khan’s company after his surprising return to WWE at Survivor Series on Saturday, The Post asked him about the positive contribution Punk made during his two-plus years in the company.

Punk, 45, debuted in AEW on the inaugural episode of Rampage on Aug. 20, 2021, had his first match at All Out a few weeks later and wrestled his last match with the company at the All In pay-per-view in front of 72,000 people at England’s Wembley Stadium on Aug. 27, 2023. All Out, did an AEW record 215,000 buys.

CM Punk returned to WWE at Survivor Series on Nov. 25, 2023. WWE

“The First Dance was an incredible moment in wrestling and was part of a very important time in AEW,” Khan said in a Zoom interview. “All Out 2021, along with All In, are our biggest pay-per-views of all time and we’ve had a lot of great success as a company as a team and in some of the most exciting times, CM Punk has been a big part of that team.”

While Punk’s AEW highlights also included a win over MJF in a bloody dog collar match at Revolution 2022 that included him recreating his old Ring of Honor entrance, his tenure with the company will be remembered as a tumultuous one.

After tearing his triceps at All Out 2022 in a match where he beat “Hangman” Adam Page for the AEW world championship, Punk went off on Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, Matt and Nick Jackson, during the post-show press conference, saying he “works with children.”

Punk and The Elite ended up brawling backstage, leading to suspensions.

Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, returned in June on the debut episode of “AEW Collision” after his injury healed, but the tensions were never officially squashed between Punk and The Elite.

He then got into a backstage altercation with Jack Perry, the son of former 90210 star Luke Perry, at Wembley Stadium.

Perry said “cry me a river” to the camera during his pre-show match with Hook as the two used real glass while they fought on top of a limo.

It was reportedly in reference to Punk nixing him using real glass on an episode of Collison despite it being approved by AEW management.

AEW announced on Sept. 2 that Punk had been fired with cause after the incident.

The self-proclaimed “Best in the World” then made a stunning return to WWE after nearly 10 years to close Survivor Series in Chicago last Saturday and cut a promo on “Monday Night Raw” two days later.

While Punk did not mention AEW by name, he did say “I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to make money” to the camera as the show went off the air and did a small victory lap in the ring, which could be seen as a shot across the bow at the Young Bucks.

Matt and Nick Jackson did a lap around the ring with their hands up on their first-ever appearance on Collision after Punk’s firing.
