NextImg:Clippers’ Amir Coffey charged with two misdemeanors related to gun possession

Los Angeles Clippers forward Amir Coffey was charged with two misdemeanors in late August, according to a report from TMZ on Sunday, relating to an arrest from July 31.

TMZ says that the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office “filed one count of carrying a loaded firearm and one count of carrying a concealed firearm against Coffey” following a report suggesting that Coffey, 26, possessed a gun in his vehicle earlier in the summer during a traffic stop in Hollywood.

Coffey’s vehicle was pulled over on July 30 and was said to be speeding at 2:30 a.m. that morning.

Law enforcement alleges that Coffey’s vehicle smelled like marijuana, prompting them to search and found a loaded gun, TMZ says.

Coffey, who was said to claim the gun as his own, was jailed for several hours and later released.

TMZ says that Coffey has a court hearing later this month.

The Los Angeles Clippers signed Coffey to a two-way contract in 2019, shortly after going undrafted out of Minnesota.

The 6-foot-7 forward has been with the Clippers for four seasons and had a breakout season in 2021-22, leading to a three-year extension worth $11 million, with two years remaining.

Coffey averaged 9.0 points in 22.7 minutes per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the field in 2021-22, and saw his scoring average drop to 3.4 points on a career-low 38.6 percent shooting while logging only 12.5 per contest in his 50 appearances for the 2022-23 season.
