Powered by Reelgood

Prime Video‘s newest spy thriller series, Citadel: Diana, follows Diana Cavalieri (Matilda De Angelis), a double agent struggling to survive within the evil terrorist organization Manticore a whole eight years after the destruction of her home agency Citadel. Citadel: Diana is the first of two planned Citadel spin-offs premiering this fall and its events have massive implications for the future of the entire franchise.

So did you already binge your way through all six episodes of Citadel: Diana? Did you find yourself confused about how the mysterious Manticore weapon worked? Are you unsure if Edo (Lorenzo Cervasio) is a good guy or not? Were you completely confused by the final reveal? Are you worried that Diana has totally sipped the Manticore Kool-aid?

**Spoilers for Citadel: Diana, now streaming on Prime Video**

Citadel: Diana starts in 2030 Milan. Manticore Italy agents Diana and Luca (Marouane Zotti) are sent on a top secret mission spying on a meeting between Manticore France and Manticore Germany. When Diana — still secretly a loyal Citadel agent after all these years — realizes that Manticore’s French and German branches are colluding to combine dangerous Citadel tech into a game-changing weapon, she goes rogue. She sparks a shootout that kills the French agent to get her hands on one half of the mystery weapon. When Luca accuses her of treachery, she kills him to keep her secret.

Soon, the only person in Manticore that Diana can trust is Edo Zani, the brilliant son and heir of the Italian operation’s cold-blooded Ettore Zani (Maurizio Lombardi). The two balance the sparks of their flirtation with a mad scheme to seize control of the weapon so they change Manticore for the better.

However, when the dust settles on Citadel: Diana Season 1, has Diana betrayed her ideals out of love for Edo? Has Edo turned into an even more vicious version of his father? And what happened to Gabriele (Filippo Nigro), Diana’s Citadel mentor who seemingly died when the spy organization collapsed? And what’s next for the characters of Citadel: Diana?

Here’s everything we know about the end of Citadel: Diana Season 1…

In the final episode of Citadel: Diana, we learn that after Diana and Edo’s wild scheming, Manticore Italy finally has the completed version of the mysterious weapon, which they call “Jupiter.” According to Edo, the French half of the weapon is a microscopic interception system which is inserted into the German half, a biotechnology component, which is, in turn, absorbed into the body like a parasite. Jupiter turns people into their own data farmers. The Italian element is a remote killing system devised by Ettore, but designed by the brilliant Edo.

Initially, Diana leaves Manticore and Edo. She even goes so far as to secretly purchase her family’s house after her sister Sara (Giordana Faggiano) leaves Italy with her family. However, she returns to Edo, explaining that alongside him is the first time she has hope to transform Manticore for the better.

Diana is dispatched to put the first trial run of Jupiter into the drinking supply, but Ettore sends his loyal fixer Matteo (Daniele Paoloni) with her with orders to kill Diana. After Edo’s mother Julia (Thekla Reuten) reveals that his father plans to have Matteo kill Diana, Edo goes rogue. He slips his father Jupiter via drinking water and threatens to kill him if he doesn’t call Mateo off. When Ettore refuses, telling Edo that as a Zani, he’s got to make difficult choices, Edo defiantly makes the call to kill his father.

“Edo’s trajectory is almost diametrically opposed to Diana’s in the sense that Diana wants to be free and is slowly convinced by by Edo that his vision for Manticore, which is very similar to what Citadel is all about, actually will make the world a better place,” Citadel: Diana showrunner Gina Gardini told Decider.

“Edo, to achieve his goal, actually has to very much dirty his hands. You know, we see him kill for the first time. We see that to achieve this idealistic goal, he has to do some very terrible things. And what does it mean to finally get the power that you’ve wanted for most of your life?” Gardini asked. “It’s interesting for this character because he’s going through sort of a dark abyss while she’s going into the light. And, you know, I love that.”

Meanwhile, Diana manages to survive her brawl with Matteo. As she leaves the water tank, she returns to discover the Manticore guards dead. Who killed them? None other than Gabriele. As it turns out, Gabriele was not killed! Diana’s joy at seeing her Citadel mentor’s face suggests she is still Citadel through and through.

So what happens next? Will we learn what happened to Gabriele in Citadel Season 2? Will Amazon continue the story with Citadel: Diana Season 2? When Decider asked Gardini about plans for future seasons of Citadel: Diana, she was coy.

“Obviously, we’re here to celebrate the first season and who knows what’s going to happen in the future,” Gardini said. “But as the series ends, there’s a lot of jumping off points, right, for Diana, for Edo, for Gabriele reappearing. So it’s very exciting whatever happens and whatever future developments there are.”

During an interview with Citadels EPs Anthony Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, and David Weil, Citadel showrunner Weil revealed that Citadel: Diana takes place at a crucial moment between the first and second seasons of the original Prime Video show.

“So Citadel (U.S.) takes place just before Diana takes place. And [Citadel (U.S.)] Season 2 will take place just after the events of Diana,” Weil said.

Angela Russo-Otstot even expressed that there will be a “continued theme exploration” from Citadel: Diana to Citadel Season 2.

“We are going to see characters who have appeared throughout both series, you know, crossing over,” she confirmed.

Keep in mind that the Zanis were already name-checked in Citadel Season 1 and Decider can confirm that there is a similar Citadel: Diana Easter egg in next month’s Citadel: Honey Bunny. So the plan is definitely to weave in characters and events from one Citadel show into another. We just don’t know yet if Matilda De Angelis or Lorenzo Cervasio will pop up next alongside Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas or if they’ll return in a Citadel: Diana Season 2…
