Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer might’ve voted in favor of a G.O.P. spending bill, but that doesn’t mean his fight against the current administration is over.
On this morning’s episode of The View, Schumer reminded the co-hosts that while many Democrats were critical of his decision to support the bill over a government shutdown, the political party is still “united” on one topic: taking down President Donald Trump.
“We are united in going after Trump and showing the American people that he is making the middle class pay for the tax cuts on the rich,” Schumer said. “Today we’re doing it on Medicaid. We’re going to do it very soon on the tariffs.”
Schumer blasted Trump’s “stupid” plan to raise tariffs on other countries, which in turn will raise the average American family “$20,000 a year.”
So, why does Trump want to raise tariffs if they’ll have such a negative affect on middle-class households? Schumer claimed, “He wants to use that money for tax cuts for the billionaires.”
“The Republican Party is a different kettle of fish than it used to be. That’s why we’re fighting them so hard,” Schumer continued. “They are controlled by a small group of wealthy, greedy people. And you know what their attitude is? ‘I made my money all by myself. How dare your government take my money from me. I don’t want to pay taxes.’ Or, ‘I built my company with my bare hands. How dare your government tell me how I should treat my customers, the land and order that I own, or my employees.’”

He added, “They hate government. Government’s a barrier to people — a barrier to stop them from doing things. They want to destroy it. We are not letting them do it and we’re united.”
Elsewhere in his sit-down with The View co-hosts, Schumer accused MAGA Republicans of wanting to “decimate the government.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
