Christian McCaffrey’s white-hot start to the 2023 NFL season has him on the radar of oddsmakers everywhere.

After another dominant performance on Sunday, the 49ers running back is the clear favorite at +210 (BetMGM) to win the Offensive Player of the Year award.

McCaffrey has 459 rushing yards, 141 receiving yards and seven total touchdowns through four games, helping lead San Francisco to a 4-0 start.

Competition for the award is shaping up to be a three-horse race, with only the Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill and the Vikings’ Justin Jefferson (both +550) having odds better than +2000.

McCaffrey, who was traded to the 49ers from the Carolina Panthers midseason last year, entered Week 4 tied with Hill atop the odds board at +475, but a monster game helped him pull away.

The Stanford alum ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns while also catching seven passes for 71 yards and another trip into the end zone during a 35-16 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Offensive Player of the Year award traditionally goes to a non-quarterback but McCaffrey’s play has him in the conversation of something unthinkable: Winning the MVP as a running back.

The NFL MVP award is all but a quarterback’s award. Only three players — Adrian Peterson in 2012, LaDainian Tomlinson in 2005 and Shaun Alexander in 2004 — have won the award as a non-quarterback over the past 20 seasons.

Over the past five seasons, only Rams receiver Cooper Kupp in 2021 has received a first-place MVP vote as a non-quarterback.

After opening the season at +8000 to win the award, McCaffrey is now down to +1400, the sixth-best odds in the NFL at BetMGM, to be the 2023 MVP.

Trailing five quarterbacks, McCaffrey is still a long shot, to be sure, but he’s the engine of a powerhouse 49ers offense.

And his 2023 season is already entering all-time territory.

On Sunday, he became just the third player in NFL history with 600+ yards from scrimmage and seven or more touchdowns through his team’s first four games.

McCaffrey has also scored a touchdown in 13 straight games, a franchise record and tied for the third-longest streak in NFL history.

If he can stay healthy all season, McCaffrey will be in the conversation until the very end.
