It appears the best tight end in football has a real chance of suiting up for Thursday’s season opener.
After it was reported that Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce hyperextended his knee at practice on Tuesday and was doubtful for Thursday’s games against the Lions, the Pro Bowler’s status is trending upwards.
Following a morning workout Thursday, in which Chiefs personnel tested Kelce’s injured knee — he’s currently dealing with a bone bruise — the two-time Super Bowl champ is a “true game-day decision” for Thursday night’s contest, according to NFL Network.
“We hope that he’ll be able to go tonight. He’ll be a game-time decision, but he’s somebody who loves to compete, so I wouldn’t bet against him being on the field tonight,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt added on “Good Morning Football” Thursday.

The worst-case scenario of an ACL injury has already been avoided, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“Source says that there is no structural damage here and this is not expected to be a long-term injury,” Rapoport said on Wednesday. “That said there was some swelling, I would say some real significant swelling that needs to go down in order for him to get back on the field.”
Kelce’s brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce, added he had been through the same thing.

“I’ve done something similar when you just plant, and your knee hyperextends,” Kelce noted on the WIP Morning Show in Philadelphia on Wednesday. “I know he’s got some swelling going on, but it sounds like as long as they can get that down, he’s gonna have a chance to go.
“The ligaments and everything are intact. Structurally, from what we know right now, his knee is fine, so really it’s about getting that swelling down and then seeing how bruised that bone is because if you have ever had those, they can be pretty painful.”
Kelce, an eight-time Pro-Bowler, is the Chiefs’ leading receiver, coming off a season in which he caught 110 passes for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He has played at least 15 games every season since 2014.
