The Chiefs probably wish they could have gotten this one done a week sooner.
Following the team’s Week 1 upset loss to the Lions, the Chiefs and star defensive tackle Chris Jones agreed to a new one-year contract on Monday, ending Jones’ holdout, the team announced.
“Chris is an elite player in this league, and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team,” Kansas City general manager Brett Veach said in a statement on the team website.
“He’s been instrumental to our success and Super Bowl championship runs and it was a priority for us to keep him in a Chiefs uniform.”
Jones, a four-time Pro Bowler and a vital piece of the defensive core for two Chiefs’ Super Bowl teams, was due to make $19.5 million this season before becoming a free agent.
No new years have been added to his contract, but the team did tack on incentives that allow Jones to make “significantly” more money this season, Adam Schefter reported.
According to Pro Football Talk, Jones was not demanding more money than Aaron Donald ($30 million) or Quinnen Williams ($26 million) in his contract negotiations.
The 29-year-old defensive tackle was seeking a three-year deal in the range of $84 million total, while the Chiefs proposed a three-year contract for $74 million.
Jones has emerged as a dominant game-breaker for the Chiefs over his seven years with the team, recording 15.5 sacks last year and 65 throughout his career.

The Chiefs’ star tight end, Travis Kelce, who also missed Week 1 — for an injury — pleaded with Jones to return to the team earlier this month.
“He’s the best defensive player in the league right now,” Kelce said on the “New Heights” podcast with his brother Jason. “He’s deserving of all the money in the world. Chris, I love you, please come back. Now.”
