When you hear about a lasting, successful relationship that withstands the test of time, you have to wonder what that couple’s secret is. Today on The Drew Barrymore Show, chef Carla Hall revealed the surprising thing that she says keeps her own 18-year marriage successful: going to the bathroom with the door open.
During the morning news segment, Drew Barrymore, Hall, and co-host Ross Mathews discussed a recent statement made by Judge Judy Sheindlin, who has been married to her husband Jerry for 46 years. Judge Judy revealed that the key to their longevity was “not spending 24 hours a day together.”
“This seems like such sage, salient advice,” Barrymore responded, before asking Hall, who has been married to her husband Matthew Lyons since 2006, for her own tips on how to have a healthy marriage. Without missing a beat, Hall responded, “The secret is to go to the bathroom with the door open.”
“Really?!” a shocked Barrymore replied.
“That whole thing, in sickness and in health, I think that you have to understand that they are a human being from the roota to the toota and you have to really get in there and be okay. You cannot fake yourself in the bathroom,” Hall said adamantly.
Mathews was completely shocked, exclaiming, “What!?” as he threw his hands up. “You really think that’s a good idea, that there should be no mystery left at all?”

“Not there. That person is sick, I’m like, I have seen you and smelled you at your worst. I’ve got you,” Hall said solemnly as she stared into Mathews’ eyes.
“Wow. I disagreed until you looked me in the eye and told me that,” Mathews said. “I did not see that advice coming today from Carla, but thank you for that.”
