Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson both communicate in English, but they speak a different language.
On their Volume podcast, “Nightcap,” the two former NFL stars had a conversation in which Johnson was floored that Sharpe would pay $10,000 for a Pomeranian doggy.
At first, Johnson was confused as to why Sharpe would put in the effort of buying a dog “from overseas.”
“I wanted one that looked like this,” Sharpe explained matter-of-factly about his pup, Teddy, who looks like a teddy bear.
Johnson was not swayed, saying, “You went way overseas to get a Pomeranian? I could’ve gotten one from my homebody in the city.”
Johnson asked what the dog cost, and Sharpe answered that it was 10 bands.
Johnson then asked what “bands” means, and Sharpe said that a band is $1,000.
“Man, you paid $10,000 for a dog? 10,000 American dollars? C’mon, man, I could’ve gotten you a Pom out of the city for $300!”
Sharpe explained that he had a dog handler who flew from her native country to a different one to pick up the dog, and then to Los Angeles to deliver it to him, and then back to where she’d come from.
Johnson still couldn’t understand the price tag, compounded with the vaccinations, food and vet bills.
“Now that we’re a pair you need to run things by me before you make those types of decisions where you’re paying that kind of money for anything,” Johnson said.
When the clip started to go viral, Johnson stood firm, tweeting, “My book on financial literacy dropping Christmas cause this is unacceptable regardless of income.”
Johnson and Sharpe have previously argued about whether or not private jets are worth the hefty fees.
The moment Sharpe received Teddy at LAX was captured by paparazzi this past February.
