Matthew Gray Gubler fans have to wait a little longer for his new CBS procedural drama.

While news of the network ordering Einstein to series — as well as a comedy titled DMV — broke last Tuesday (April 22), TVLine reports that the show has been delayed until the 2026-2027 slate, citing limited shelf space and the chance for the series to benefit from a longer pre-production period.

According to Variety, CBS is slated to announce its fall TV schedule next Wednesday, May 7 at a press conference.

While Gubler’s most recent credit listed on IMDb was a 7-episode arc as Wes in the Hulu comedy Dollface, he confirmed in a December 2024 interview with Ansa that he would be reprising his role of Dr. Spencer Reid in an episode of Season 18 of Criminal Minds: Evolution. The new season premieres next Thursday, May 8.

The pilot for Einstein, which is an adaptation of a German series, was ordered back in August 2024, with Gubler’s casting in the title role of Lewis Einstein being announced in October 2024, per Deadline.

As the outlet writes, his character is the “brilliant and directionless… great grandson of Albert Einstein,” who “spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad-boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases.”

In addition to Gubler, Rosa Salazar was also cast in the series as a New Jersey State Police detective.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, three new CBS spin-offs will hit the network in the upcoming 2025-2026 TV slate — Boston Blue (Blue Bloods), CIA (FBI), and Sheriff Country (Fire Country).
