Carson Beck will be leading Georgia’s quest for a three-peat.
Beck, a junior, beat out Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton in a training camp battle to replace Stetson Bennett, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart announced Saturday.
“He’s done the best job,” Smart told reporters in Athens. “We communicated that earlier in the week to the other quarterbacks and we’ve kind of been operating that way.
“The other guys have done a tremendous job in terms of competing and they’re going to continue to do that.”
Beck, who threw for 310 yards as a backup last season, was the favorite coming into camp.
He took the opportunity and ran with it, closing the door on a quarterback controversy — at least for now — for the two-time title-winning outfit.
Bennett, a Heisman Trophy finalist last year and the offensive MVP of both Georgia’s national title game wins, set a high bar by coming from nowhere to be one of the best quarterbacks in the nation.
He won the job after transferring from Georgia to Jones College — a JUCO in Mississippi — and back, commanding one of the most dominant title runs in history last year.
With Beck and newly installed offensive coordinator Mike Bobo replacing Todd Monken, the expectation will be to pick up where they left off.
“Coach Bobo has done a great job with these guys, and they both made a lot of plays with their feet and done some good things,” Smart said. “Carson has been in this offense for a year over one of them [Vandagriff] and two years over Gunnar. He’s just ahead.”
Smart has yet to decide who the No. 2 will be, saying both Vandagriff and Stockton will get reps with the first team over the next two weeks to try and earn the backup role.
