BALTIMORE — A few tweets went viral this week showing Carlos Rodon’s sleeves rolled up, obscuring the “Starr Insurance” patch that has been added to the right sleeve of Yankees jerseys.
The many folks who viewed those tweets knew about the minuscule controversy before Rodon did, according to the Yankees lefty.
“I had no idea until you brought that up,” Rodon told a reporter Friday before the Yankees opened a series at Camden Yards.
“I didn’t even know that the patch was covered.”
The Yankees sold the space on their uniform to the corporate sponsor, reportedly for a figure of more than $20 million per year, and added the patch after the All-Star break.
Rodon pitched Wednesday on a hot night in The Bronx with several buttons unbuttoned (as he often does) and with his sleeves shorter.
The sleeves “might just come up [as I’m pitching],” said Rodon, who pitched well in a win over the Mets.
The first-year Yankees starter said the club has not approached him about ensuring the patch is visible.
The jersey is “just a little bit looser for me. That’s the way I’ve always done it,” Rodon said.
