NextImg:Cameron Young in danger of missing PGA Championship cut over putting mishap

A simple putting mistake could potentially lead to Cameron Young missing the cut at this year’s PGA Championship.

Young was on his seventh hole during Friday’s second round at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, where he shot the ball onto the green of the par-4 16th hole and his 59-foot birdie putt came up a couple of feet short.

Young moved the ball one clubhead length to the side as it was in the line of play of his partners, Tommy Fleetwood and Hideki Matsuyama.

Though Young made his par putt, he failed to move the ball pack to its original spot.

He received a 2-stroke penalty as a result of the rules violation.

“As a result, when he replaced the ball and holed out, Young had played from a wrong place and incurred the General Penalty (two strokes) for breaching Rule 15.3,” the PGA Championship rules committee said in a statement.

A rules official approached the trio on the fifth hole, which was the group’s 14th hole of the round, to discuss the situation, according to Fleetwood.

“We didn’t know it happened,” Fleetwood said. “Honestly, I feel bad because I’m the one who asked him to move his marker, then you’re in your own little world at times. I would always say, ‘Move it back.'”

The mishap came with a double-bogey 6 for Young.

Prior to the incident, Young — the 15th ranked player in the world — had been gaining on his competitors after a 4-over 74 in Thursday’s first round, with carded birdies on holes 11, 12, and 15 to gain 2-under in the round and 2 over overall.

Young dropped to 4 over after a double-bogey on the 16th and also double-bogeyed on No. 6.

With a total of 9 over after 36 holes, Young’s chances of playing through the weekend are slim as the projected cut line is expected to be 4 over.

He declined to comment after the round.

Young finished tied for seventh at the Masters in April with a 6-under, which was a big improvement from his first Masters in 2022, when he missed the cut after shooting a pair of 77s.
