Cam Newton is ready to settle.
“I feel there ain’t 32 guys that are better than me,” the former NFL said in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel Wednesday night.
But in an attempt to get back in the league, he announced that he is ready to accept a backup role – on his terms.
The soon-to-be 34-year-old is interested in holding the clipboard for a few players, including Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.
“I’ve grown to admire the person, the athlete. He is going through a lot of turmoil. I believe that’s behind him,” Newton said of Watson.
The sales pitch concluded with Newton saying, “I know I can provide services for him on the field as well as off the field.”
His complete list: Watson, Lamar Jackson (wherever he ends up), Justin Fields, Tua Tagovailoa, Malik Willis, Jalen Hurts, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Sam Howell and incoming rookies C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Anthony Richardson.
Newton has a longstanding relationship with Watson, whom he selected to be his quarterback in a 7-on-7 all-star team for the Newton Foundation when Watson was a junior at Gainsville High School.
Many of the quarterbacks listed are younger, showing that Watson is ready to act as a mentor to the league’s brightest stars.
But he still has that competitive drive.
“If I didn’t say that person’s name in that list, it’s either you’re already solidified as a starter, and it doesn’t do me any justice [to be the backup], or let’s battle it out. Let’s compete,” Newton said.
