CHARLOTTE — The Nets will be without Cam Johnson for at least the next 10 days.
Johnson underwent an MRI exam on his left calf contusion that revealed a strain. The forward will be reevaluated in 10 days, per team sources.
It’s the latest in a string of injury setbacks for Johnson. He missed the entire preseason with a hamstring injury on the same leg.
Johnson returned for last Wednesday’s regular-season opener, scoring 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the narrow loss to visiting Cleveland. But he suffered the injury late in that game, and will end up missing at least two weeks.
“Nothing related to the hamstring. Acute injury that happened at the end of the game that really didn’t know about, presented the next day,” coach Jacque Vaughn said of Johnson.
Johnson arrived alongside Mikal Bridges in last season’s Kevin Durant trade, and inked a four-year deal, $94 million extension in the summer. His floor spacing will be missed for Brooklyn, his 42 percent shooting from 3-point range over the past two seasons fifth-best among players with at least 500 attempts.
Brooklyn will also be without starting center Nic Claxton (left ankle sprain) for Monday night’s game at Charlotte. Two-ways Armoni Brooks and Jalen Wilson, as well as rookie first-round picks Noah Clowney and Dariq Whitehead, won’t be with the team as they’ll be back in Long Island for the start of G League training camp on Tuesday.
Claxton had been in a walking boot since the injury, but in what could be a sign of progress got out of the boot before Monday morning’s shootaround.
With both Johnson and Claxton out, the Nets went with a smallball five-out lineup Friday in Dallas. They used 6-7, 220-pound stretch four Dorian Finney-Smith as an undersized center, and Cam Thomas got a rare start in a three-guard lineup alongside Bridges.
