Why are representatives and senators still receiving pay when federal employees are not (“ ‘Schutdown,’ ” Oct. 8)?
If we want this shutdown to end quickly, we need to stop paying our representatives and senators during the shutdown. It’s amazing how their opinions may differ when they feel the personal effects of their decisions.

I am shocked but joyful that I agree with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on something: Medical costs for everyone — including her — will go up if this shutdown continues.
I am amazed that there is some empathy here. Yet Trump and the rest of the MAGA Republicans don’t care if people suffer.

How is it that the senators and representatives cannot agree on a spending package, but experience no interruption in receipt of their annual salaries of $174,000 or more while the little guys and gals who toil as rank-and-file employees —who are in no way responsible for the dispute — must suffer?
Is the goal to inflict harm on working families? It would seem so.

I want to see policies that improve the lives of working New Yorkers, but senators like Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are disappointingly blocking that.
The House rightly passed a clean continuing resolution to keep the government open, yet Senate Democrats continue to play political theater with our lives. They demand $1.5 trillion in spending increases on left-wing priorities.
Gillibrand and Schumer are choosing individuals who broke the law to enter this country over New York citizens, health-care workers and veterans. We expect better.
Senators: It’s time to support the clean continuing resolution and reopen the government.

What happened to common sense? Of course the subsidies to Obamacare have to be extended, as Democrats demand to reopen the government.
People on Obamacare cannot afford the 75% increase in premiums. Plus, some will even lose their insurance. Extend the Affordable Care Act expansion!

Curtis Sliwa has said that people are urging him to drop out of the race for mayor because he has no chance of winning and is being selfish, making it all about himself (“Rudy backs Sliwa,” Oct. 8).
Well, they are correct on every count. Sliwa — a “vigilante” — is the worst case of prolonged adolescence I have ever witnessed. Without having any credentials, he managed to portray this comic book figure in a red hat for decades. I wince at those who take him seriously.
If he leaves, he allows for the chance to defeat a socialist’s bid to become our mayor.
If he stays, he and his supporters bear the brunt of responsibility for electing Zohran Mamdani.

There is no reason for Curtis Sliwa to drop out of the mayoral race. He is the winner of the Republican primary and must be treated as such.
I think Andrew Cuomo screwed up, underestimated Zohran Mamdani and ran a garbage campaign. Mamdani beat him fair and square.
And how has everyone forgotten what Cuomo did during the pandemic? He ran New York like a tyrant and was likely responsible for the deaths of many elderly people. He’s not suited to be a dog-catcher, never mind mayor. New York City’s only shot at getting back to normal is Sliwa.
