One person was killed when an “experimental homebuilt” single-engine plane crashed just a block away from a Southern California airport.

The deadly incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Auburndale and West Rincon streets in the city of Corona, located about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

The plane, described by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as a Van’s Aircraft RV-8 sold in kit form, slammed into a tree, killing the pilot who was the only person on board.

The victim has not been identified as of early Monday.

The aviation disaster sparked a small vegetation fire, which was put out by Corona firefighters a short time later, according to local officials.

The crash was reported minutes after the plane took off from the nearby Corona Municipal Airport, according to preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration, reported the station KTLA.

It was not immediately known what caused the plane to fall out of the sky.

An investigation into the crash by the NTSB was underway.
