Busy Philipps became emotional while opening up about her ex-husband Marc Silverstein on this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.

The Freaks and Geeks star recently made headlines for teaming up with her screenwriter ex-husband for a garage sale in which they donated a portion of the proceeds to organizations supporting women’s reproductive rights.

Host Drew Barrymore brought up the conversation when she pointed out that she and Silverstein have worked together for “many years” on projects like Never Been Kissed and He’s Just Not That Into You.

“You are like the model co-parents,” she told Philips, who shares two daughters with Silverstein. “Everyone was loving the storage unit cleanup.”

The Girls5eva actress then dished on what it was like cleaning out her storage unit with Silverstein, whom she separated from in 2021 after 14 years of marriage.

“We went through this life together, together,” she said, before becoming choked up. “We went through all of these boxes that we hadn’t seen, honestly, since we split up and we really were able to — oh no, I might cry — we really were able to look at each other and say, ‘Look at this beautiful life that we had together and this is so nice and wouldn’t it be so nice if somebody else took it and brought it into their beautiful life and we can move on?'”

In classic Barrymore fashion, the host made her way across the stage to give Philipps a bear hug and praise her “inspiring” relationship with the father of her children.

“Here’s the thing, I think that we get so — in this culture especially, in our world — we get so hemmed into the ideas of what family looks like and what relationships look like and it can be lots of things,” Philipps said. “If anything, it can be a number of different equations that equal family.”

Philipps first revealed that she was separated from Silverstein on a 2022 episode of her podcast, Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best, where she explained that they struggled with announcing their split publicly.

“The surest way that Marc and I have been able to ensure the privacy of our kids that we love so fucking much was by not involving the public,” she said, per People, before adding, “We love each other — very much! And we have these beautiful kids together. And there are a lot of things that really work about our relationship.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
