After the papal conclave appointed Pope Leo XIV as Pope Francis’ successor, Busy Philipps opened up during her recent visit to The View about the remarkable interaction she had with Pope John Paul II when she was just 15 years old.

The actress and talk show host revealed she had been “blessed” by Pope John Paul II when she was having a crisis of faith after getting an abortion at 15.

“I had an abortion when I was 15 and I was raised Catholic and I was really grappling with what that meant for me and where my place was with God,” she confessed on the show. “While I knew it was the right decision, it was really hard for a 15-year-old to deal with that.”

Philipps recalled that she later went on a trip to Europe with friends where they stopped at the Vatican on a day Pope John Paul II happened to be giving an address.

She said “a confluence of circumstances that are pretty divine” happened at that moment.

“I got shoved really hard from behind and then this woman turned right at the same time almost and said, ‘You need it more than me,'” she recounted. Philipps said she “flew forward” and came face to face with Pope John Paul II. “We had an exchange. We talked and he blessed me and held my face in his hands.”

The View host Sara Haines pointed out that Pope John Paul II’s blessing seemed like “the answer to the question” Philipps had been asking herself at the time.

When Ana Navarro asked how it felt to receive his blessing, Philipps said, “It was like a surge of energy. I was shaking like crazy.”

She then said the crowd of people “descended” on her after the pope left.

“All of these people descended on me and were pulling my hair and kissing my face and touching me because I was the only person he did that to,” she recounted.

Philipps had previously shared the story in her memoir This Will Only Hurt A Little, where she claimed the day that exchange occurred was supposed to be her due date, per Page Six.

“I never told this story publicly … I haven’t even told people I’m very close with,” she writes. “It doesn’t work for me without getting the absolution I needed. And from the only person in the world who could give it to me: the Pope in Rome.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
