NextImg:Buck Showalter trying hard for Angels interview after Mets firing

Buck Showalter still has the itch to manage.

After being ousted by the Mets on Sunday following two years in charge, the 67-year-old is interested in the Angels’ managerial opening and is trying hard to get an interview, The Post’s Mike Puma reported Thursday.

The Angels parted ways with skipper Phil Nevin after they had a disastrous 73-89 season in which they made a slew of trades to bulk up at the deadline, and they’re likely to lose two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani in free agency.

Angels GM Perry Minasian is entering the final year of his contract.

The Mets had a similarly abysmal season despite World Series expectations as they off-loaded Justin Verlander to the Astros and Max Scherzer to the Rangers.

Showalter led the Mets to 101 wins last year in his first season with the team, but they took a disappointing wild-card round loss to the Padres and won just 75 games this year.

The underwhelming campaign included Showalter butting heads with general manager Billy Eppler about the presence of designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach, as The Post’s Mike Puma reported Wednesday.

Showalter didn’t want to play Vogelbach often and, after the trade deadline, wondered why he was still on the team, but Eppler insisted that Vogelbach be placed in the lineup.

Showalter revealed Sunday he wouldn’t be back with the Mets, one day before David Stearns was introduced as the club’s new president of baseball operations.

It seemed like Eppler was going to remain as the GM as he attended Stearns’ press conference on Monday, but Eppler shockingly resigned Thursday amid an MLB probe into his use of the injured list.

“I wanted David to have a clean slate and that meant me stepping down,” Eppler, the former Angels GM, said in a release. “I hope for nothing but the best for the entire Mets organization.”

Stearns, the former Brewers president of baseball operations, can begin pursuing Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell after the Brewers were swept by the Diamondbacks in the wild-card round Wednesday.
